4A is Full of Cheer…

Standard

Hi families!

The countdown is on! This is an exciting week with lots of school spirit activities planned! There will be no official homework this week but please, please, please keep up with the reading and some math fact practice if you get a chance.

The kids have been working so incredibly hard on their stories and they are really coming together. I am so proud of them and I know you will be too when you see what they have been working on. We can’t wait for everyone that is available to visit this Wednesday at 1:45pm. I will have some juice and a treat to share and if anyone wants to bring something to contribute to a shared snack please feel free, so long as it is nut free.

A reminder that tomorrow is the grade six used book sale. They are selling books in great used condition for 1 and 2 dollars. There are also some other activities that the kids can participate in at a cost of .25 and .50 cents. All monies raised goes to Santa’s Angels.

The rest of the week’s spirit activities are:

Tuesday: Holiday head gear!

Wednesday: Festive Sweater day!

Thursday: Reindeer Games!

Friday: PJ day!

Thanks so much for all the support over the past few months! I enjoy every day with your wonderful kiddos and look forward to an awesome start to the new decade in 4A in January. Please enjoy a safe and restful break with your loved ones.

Cheers,

Julie

Busy, busy, busy!

Standard

Good afternoon!

Today was a very busy day in 4A! We began our Junior Achievement program and will be having hour long sessions for the next three days with our leader Ms. Virginia. Today she talked a lot about technology and advancements that have been made over the past few hundred years. We also had some students from another grade four class joining us so we had a full house!

The kiddos are very excited about our upcoming publishing party next week. Many of them have written a couple of stories and will be deciding on one to bring to the final stages. Others have put a great deal of effort in on a single story that they have been crafting carefully. Invitations will follow this week but due to space restrictions I ask that one or two guests per student be the maximum. Please R.S.V.P. when you get your invite!

In math we are exploring area this week. When measuring or calculating area it is very important that the kids remember that area is measuring the 2 dimensional space that something takes up and is measured in square units. If a unit of measurement is given then the answer must use that same unit of measurement but add the “2” to indicate that it is a square measurement. Ex: If the dimensions of a rectangle were 4cmX6cm than the area would be 24cm2. Area of all rectangles and squares can be calculated by multiplying the length x width.

We will be presenting our explorer projects over the next couple of weeks (finally!) I know that presenting in front of the class can be a stressor for some kids and I will support and accommodate as best I can while gently pushing them out of their comfort zone. If presenting creates excessive stress for your child at home please let me know!

Homework this week:

  1. Math sheet
  2. Word work: two activities (going home Tuesday) 1) Choose 12 list words and put them into sentences. 2) Sort the list words according to a sorting rule of your choice. (Ex. Words with one vowel/ two vowels/ three vowels.)
  3. Reading each night
  4. Math Facts practice

There are a number of fund raising initiatives taking place this week and next.

Grade 1 Cupcake Sale

The grade one classes are hosting their annual cupcake sale this Friday, December 19th. The cost of a cupcake is 0.50 and there is a limit of two per student. All proceeds go to the World Wildlife Foundation adopt an endangered animal campaign.

Grade 6 Used Book Sale
The grade 6 classes will be hosting the Used Book Sale again this year. It is part of The Kindness Project and the first group they would like to support is Santa’s Angels. All money made will be donated to this cause. Books will be for sale for $1 and $2.

The book sale will take place on Tuesday, December 17th. There will also be a “Candy for Kindness” candy guessing jar (25 cents per guess – closest guess gets the whole jar) and a “Balloons for Books” – pop a balloon for 25 cents and have a chance to win a free book.
Grade six also have a donation sheet set up at Aubrey’s bottle exchange. If you are recycling your empties and want to donate the refund to The Kindness Project, we would be ever so grateful! Again, all donations will also be given to Santa’s Angels.

Thanks for reading and have a great week!

-Julie

December…Whoa!

Standard

Wow, the December energy was in the air today with the fresh snow and lots of holiday activities going on over the weekend. We are also welcoming a new student to our class this week. Nick is from Vietnam and stopped in for a tour today and will be joining 4A tomorrow. I had a chat with the class about how intimidating it would be to come from across the world to a whole new place and I know they will make him feel very welcome and lucky he ended up with us!

Mrs. Hambly was in today and the realistic fiction stories that the class are working on are really coming along! The kiddos are very proud of what they are creating and would like to share their work with you. We are planning to have a publishing party on December 18th at 2:00pm. Families are welcome to come to visit the class and have your child share the book that they have been working so hard on. We will have some refreshments and celebrate all the progress they have made.  Formal invitations will be sent out but please save the date!

Today in math we did a check in assessment and I am very pleased with how the math fact strategies are coming along. Many students are really seeing progress with their quick recall and others are using their strategies when they don’t immediately know an answer. Please continue the fact review at home! Next we will be incorporating our multiplication facts into the concept of area and calculating area in square units.

Today the class visited the dental clinic and were sent home with yellow forms that need to be filled out and returned for every child even if you are not requesting services.

Last week the kids went home with a Christmas family envelope in hopes of collecting donations for families within the school that are struggling and need support this time of year. Any size donation is welcome for this very worthy cause and will directly positively impact several children that go to school at West Royalty.

A reminder that learning reports go home tomorrow so keep an eye out for those. Also, please send in snow pants with the kids as many are coming in very wet from recess.

Homework this week: Math sheet, reading, word work (two activities), Math facts

I think that is all for now. Thanks for reading and have a great week!
